I'm still waiting for the service manual... Does anyone know if AM34839 is still available. It's the plate that connects the hydro lever to the linkage. I've seen a number of different styles on different 140s which makes me think NLA. Mine is made from 2 pieces of brass, it's too flexible and bents away from the N switch. What are others using?

Also should the cam on the tranny go the full range of available motion. Mine goes the the full distance to the end of the slot in reverse but is an inch short of the opposite end of the slot in forward. It stops because it's at the forward end of the hydro lever guide. I'm thinking it's out of adjustment.

I spent the better part of the day fixing little problems. I never knew that points would fire occasionally with just one strand of wire attached to them. I love older small engines, you just have to have spark, air and fuel.

Thanks,

Drew

Drew, there are three things which can throw the adjustment off. The lever and/or spring plate it attaches to may have loosened and changed position, the quadrant (gate around the lever) is adjustable and may have moved, and the linkage rod may have been bent.

I would make sure the bolts holding the quadrant and the lever arm are tight, then adjust the ball joint at the rear end on the control rod. If you can't make the adjustment you can shift the quadrant a little to reposition the lever.

Also I suggest you look carefully at the roller on the control arm (called a washer in the parts catalog). Often this roller binds on the bolt and stops turning which wears a flat spot on it. This 40 cent part when worn creates play in the linkage and makes finding neutral more difficult.
